About Janice Hurne
I am writing to introduce myself as Labour’s prospective parliamentary candidate for the New Forest West Constituency and to say what Labour is doing for you and your family at this difficult time for the local and global economy.
I was born in Kent and lived and worked in Essex until moving to Southampton in 1985 to take up a lecturing post at Southampton Institute, transferring after 2 years to lecture at Bournemouth University for 22yrs until retiring 18 months ago. I am a Maths Graduate with 10 years experience of working in the Computing Departments of the Civil Service before becoming a lecturer.
I have lived for 24 years in Hampshire and Dorset, and am married with a grown up daughter. In addition to being a member of the Fabian Society, the lecturer’s trade union NATFHE, and a member of the Co-operative Party I am a founding member of the “Bournemouth in Europe” campaigning group. I enjoy exploring the natural world on my doorstep, particularly by walking in the forest and on the coast.
My political interests are varied and wide, and can be summed up by the desire to contribute to the positive development of a sustainable world economically and environmentally. Where the individual can meet their potential, and enrich their lives, contributing collectively to the development of an inclusive world community regardless of their background or circumstances.
- Labour's immediate priority is to guide Britain through this difficult economic time. Our mission is to build a Britain of lasting prosperity and fairness for hard-working families. Labour is providing strong leadership nationally and internationally to manage the global financial situation and we will emerge from this world slowdown stronger & better.
- There are signs that the British economy is beginning to show recover but Labour is making sure that the impact of the economic downturn on working people and their families is minimised through training opportunities and help with job creation through continued investment in public services and construction projects to continue improvements in education, health and sustainable housing.
- We shall never take risks with economic stability or return to the days of 15% interest under the Tories. Labour's Future Jobs Fund will provide 150,000 new jobs, around two thirds of which will be directed at young people. The Conservatives have refused to back Labour's action, putting over 150,000 jobs at risk.
- Fairness means being on the side of the ambitions and aspirations of hard-working families and people. We are working to create an opportunity-rich country where everyone can get on in the lives they live. That’s why so much investment has been made in education to improve buildings, learning resources, and standards so that every child can reach their potential.
To deliver a more prosperous and fairer Britain Labour is:
- Acting to help ease the pain of the credit crunch for hard-working families with
- A family tax cut of £120 for 22 million basic rate taxpayers;
- An injection of £50 billion in liquidity in order to help reduce mortgage rates;
- More help for first-time buyers;
- Action to help with rising food and fuel bills.
- Supporting families as they bring up children with new rights for flexible working for all children, longer paid maternity leave for new mothers, paid paternity leave for fathers, increased Child Benefit and child tax credits. Reforming welfare so that those who can work, do work.
- Delivering neighbourhood police teams in every community to keep people safer from crime and anti-social behaviour, while cutting red tape to free up police time to spend on the beat.
- Rolling out a new Australian-style points based system for immigration so that only those who benefit Britain can come here.
- Widening access to GPs at weekends and evenings. Raising standards in schools & hospitals by placing more power in the hands of parents & patients.
- Labour is leading at home and abroad on action to tackle the threat of climate change, while working to make Britain a leader in green technology, manufacturing and services
Labour is taking the necessary steps to reform the system of MPs' expenses and regain the public's trust. We have got to have the highest standards in public life and I have pledged to ensure that in my role as prospective parliamentary candidate for the New Forest West Constituency I will personally keep to the highest standards in any financial or political dealings.
Your opinions matter, please let me know what you think.
